The concept of Kendo is to discipline the human spirit through the principles of the Katana (Japanese sword). Kendo literally means “The Way of the Sword”, and is one of Japan’s oldest martial arts, closely associated with the Samurai. While Kendo is now a popular modern sport, the historic warrior principles are still very much in evidence. It is suitable for both men and women, who compete and train together.

The ANU Kendo Club is affiliated with the Australian Kendo Renmei and the International Kendo Federation. Club members compete at local and interstate competitions throughout the year. The ANU Kendo Club accommodates all experience levels and is currently the only Kendo club in the ACT. Spectators, visiting kendoka and new members are welcome.

The Club runs two Beginner’s courses annually, at the start of each semester (March and July), for which all equipment is provided. Graduates of this course are invited to join the club. The club has armour available to loan to members.
